7 Tips for More Accurate AI Photo Calorie Estimates
Small habits that make a big difference: how to photograph your meals so the AI recognises more, guesses less and lands closer to the real numbers.

AI photo recognition does the heavy lifting, but the photo you give it still sets the ceiling. The same plate can produce a sharp estimate or a rough one depending on how it's captured. These seven habits consistently tighten the numbers.
1. Shoot before you eat
A full, untouched plate gives the model the most information. Half-eaten meals force it to guess what was there โ and portion estimates suffer most.
2. Use good, even light
Daylight or bright indoor light helps the model read textures and colours โ the difference between grilled chicken and breaded chicken, or butter and cream sauce. Dim restaurant lighting is the single most common accuracy killer.
3. Frame the whole plate, slightly from above
A shot at roughly 45 degrees with the entire plate in frame captures both what the food is and how much of it there is. Extreme close-ups lose the size reference; straight-down shots can hide height and volume.
4. Tell the AI what it's looking at
CalorieAI can ask โ optionally โ what you're photographing, or you can fill in the "Extra info" field yourself, like "a plate of chicken with rice and soy sauce". A one-line description means the AI no longer has to guess the dish, which noticeably sharpens the calorie estimate. It's the highest-leverage tip on this list for mixed and homemade meals.
5. Separate what you can
Stews, curries and casseroles hide their ingredients. When it's practical, keep components visible โ sauce beside the rice rather than fully stirred through โ or lean on tip 4 and describe what's inside.
6. Review before you save
Every result is editable. Scan the detected items, nudge a portion with the slider if it looks off, and remove anything the model saw that isn't there. Ten seconds of review turns a good estimate into a reliable one.
7. Use the right tool for the food
Photos are for plated meals. Packaged products deserve the barcode scanner and its exact label data, and for foods you eat often, a saved favourite is both faster and more precise than a fresh analysis every time.
